The Rise and fall of Instadogs

By Aurelie Denieul

Statista reported in June 2018, that Instagram was counting more than 1 billion users, including more and more accounts only about dogs, it’s called instadogs. They post pictures and tell the daily life of their dogs, with sometimes millions of followers.

Céline Jolibois owner of Naïga, 2 600 followers on Instagram said: “At the beginning, I just wanted to share our adventures, I did not expect that many followers.“

However, there is sometimes abuses. We’ve seen Instagramers adopting a dog just to increase their likes and sometimes abandoning them when the dog is not popular enough. British shelters reported recently that the breeds most common in shelters where the less popular and most popular breed on Instagram.

The less popular breeds because they are not cute enough and the most popular because people buy these dog on fashion effect and don’t realize the charge of having a dog. Céline adds: “Exchanges between instadogs are rewarding. However, Instagram stay a social network and in the end, we show what we want to show, and things can be hidden.“ If you want to adopt a dog popular or not, never forget it’s a living animal that needs care. Céline concludes: “We don’t have to forget our dog who never ask for anything of this. The dog should not be the victim of a popularity wish.“
